Sharmin and used to be a street beggar. She lives with her family in a slum dwelling in a city in Bangladesh. She used to beg for money to help her family because her father is sick. Now she is involved in the OneLife day-shelter for girls, where she gets an education and learns to make handicrafts that will bring much needed money. Sharmin dreams of becoming a science teacher.
The day-shelter prevents child trafficking and child marriages by providing free education and skills training, meals and medical care for beggar girls. Since the girl’s shelter is free, parents are willing to let their girls go to the shelter, learn useful skills and grow up before they are married.
